Peoples Plants

Southern Africa is exceptionally rich in plant diversity, with more than 10% (30 000 species) of flowering plants occuring in a mere 2,5% of the world's land surface area. This region also has a great cultural diversity, with many people still using a wide variety of plants in their daily lives.
This book gives a broad overview of indigenous plant use and is the first fully illustrated ethnobotanical guide for southern Africa. Traditional and contemporary uses of more than 650 plants are described and illustrated with more than 530 excellent photographs.
These plants are grouped into the following categories:
FOODS AND DRINKS
Cereals, seeds and nuts, fruits and berries, vegetables, roots and tubers, beverages.
HEALTH AND BEAUTY
General medicines, tonic plants, mind and mood plants, women's health, wounds, burns and skin conditions, dental care, perfumes and repellents, soap plants.
SKILLS AND CRAFTS
Hunting and fishing, dyes and tans, utility timbers, fire-making and firewood, basketry, weaving and ropes, thatching, mats and brooms.
